AI ghost mannequin: the invisible mannequin effect from one photo

· 3 min read

An AI ghost mannequin tool takes one photo of a garment on a mannequin, dress form or hanger, removes the form, and rebuilds the openings it left behind: the inside of the collar, the cuffs and the hem. You get the hollow man shot without photographing the interior separately or compositing two frames by hand.

Do this in RorlAIGhost Mannequin: Invisible mannequin, garment shape intact.

What the AI replaces

The classic invisible mannequin shot takes two photographs and an editing session. You shoot the garment on a form with removable neck and chest pieces, shoot the inside back of the collar as a second frame, then mask out the form and drop the interior into the neckline. The editing is where the hours go, and it repeats for every garment and every colorway.

An AI ghost mannequin tool collapses that into one upload. It removes the form from a single photo and generates the parts a camera could not see from the front, so the neckline looks open and the garment looks worn by someone who is not there.

Three outputs, three jobs

ModeWhat you getUse it for
Hollow manThe garment holding its worn shape, with the inside of the collar visibleThe first image on a clothing listing
Flat layThe garment laid flat and symmetrical, seen from aboveA second image, or a catalog that standardises on flat lays
CutoutThe garment exactly as photographed, form removed, nothing rebuiltBanners, composites and your own layouts

Most listings want hollow man first. Cutout is the honest choice when you need the garment untouched, because nothing in it is generated.

How to shoot the photo you upload

  1. 1Steam the garmentThe output keeps every wrinkle the photo shows. Five minutes with a steamer saves a reshoot.
  2. 2Hold the neckline openPut it on a form or a padded hanger that keeps the collar and shoulders in shape. A collar pressed flat gives the reconstruction almost nothing to work from.
  3. 3Light it evenlyWindow light or two soft lights at 45 degrees. A hard shadow across the fabric gets read as part of the fabric.
  4. 4Shoot straight on with space around itCamera at chest height of the garment, the whole piece in frame, and a background that contrasts with it so the edges separate cleanly.

What to check before you publish

Look at the output at full size and check five things:

  • The interior of the collar matches the fabric outside, one shade darker, not a flat gray patch.
  • Prints and logos are where they are on the real garment and read correctly.
  • Cuffs and the hem look open rather than sealed.
  • The color matches the garment in daylight, not your screen at night.
  • Nothing of the hanger hook or form base is left at the edges.

Where it still fails

The tool rebuilds the inside of the garment from what the photo implies. When the photo implies very little, it guesses. A completely flattened collar, a patterned lining that never shows from the front, and sheer fabric where the form shows through are the three cases that produce results you should not publish. Reshoot those with the neckline held open, or photograph them flat.

It also cannot fix a bad source. A blurry, underexposed phone photo comes back as a cleaner blurry, underexposed garment. Get the input right and the output follows.

Doing it in RorlAI

RorlAI's Ghost Mannequin studio does all three modes from one upload, on a white background with an optional soft contact shadow or as a transparent PNG. It costs 4 credits per image at 2K and 6 at 4K, takes up to 50 garments in one batch, and can send a result straight to the Apparel studio to put the same garment on a model.

Common questions

Is ghost mannequin the same as invisible mannequin?
Yes. Ghost mannequin, invisible mannequin and hollow man are three names for the same effect: the garment holds its worn shape with no body or form visible.
Do I need a professional mannequin for AI ghost mannequin photos?
No. A dress form or a padded hanger works, because the form is removed. What matters is that it holds the neckline and shoulders in shape.
Can AI ghost mannequin output have a transparent background?
Yes. Choose a transparent PNG for your own layouts, or a white background with a soft shadow for marketplace listings.
Should I still shoot the inside of the collar?
Not for an AI tool, which rebuilds it. Keep the collar open on the form so there is something to rebuild from.
