Floating Product Photography

Everything depends on the shadow underneath, which is the part people forget.

One free generation a day. No account, no card.

How it works

  1. 1. Upload your product

A clean cutout is essential, since the illusion depends on a convincing edge.

  2. 2. Choose the height

A modest float reads as deliberate; an extreme one reads as an error.

  3. 3. Generate and download

Why this is worth getting right

A floating product shot is one of the few compositions where the illusion is carried almost entirely by something other than the product, and that something is the shadow. A suspended object still occludes light, so there must be a shadow beneath it, and everything about that shadow has to agree with the scene: its direction has to match the key light, its softness has to increase with the distance the object is floating, and its density has to decrease as it spreads. Get any of those wrong and the eye immediately reads the image as two photographs stuck together, even though most viewers could not say why. That is the whole craft of the style — a product with no shadow looks pasted, and a product with a hard shadow directly beneath it looks like it is resting on invisible glass. Height is the second decision and it is easy to overdo. A modest float, a few centimetres, reads as considered and premium; a product hovering halfway up the frame reads as a mistake or a gimmick, because there is no visual logic for it. The style suits products with clean geometry and defined edges, which is why it appears constantly in footwear, cosmetics and electronics and rarely on soft goods, where the ambiguous edges of fabric fight the crispness the effect depends on. Marketplaces generally treat it as too stylised for a primary image, so it belongs in campaign work and on your own site.

Tips that actually help

  • Match the shadow direction to the key light on the product, because a mismatch is the single clearest tell of a composite.
  • Soften and spread the shadow as float height increases, since a hard shadow beneath a floating object contradicts the physics.
  • Keep the float modest, as a few centimetres reads premium while a product halfway up the frame reads as a gimmick.
  • Choose products with clean geometry, because soft goods have ambiguous edges that undermine the crispness the effect needs.
  • Reserve it for campaign and site imagery, since marketplaces generally consider it too stylised for a primary listing image.

Who uses this

Footwear campaigns
Clean geometry and defined edges make trainers one of the best-suited products for the style.
Cosmetics and packaging
Rigid containers float convincingly and the style reads as premium in the category.
Electronics and accessories
Hard-edged products where a float suggests engineering rather than whimsy.
Banner and hero imagery
Compositions with room for type, where a floating product leaves clean negative space.

Questions fréquentes

Why does my floating product look pasted?
Almost always the shadow. Either it is missing, pointing the wrong way, or it is too hard for the height the object appears to be floating at.
How high should it float?
Modestly. A few centimetres reads as deliberate and premium, while a product hovering halfway up the frame reads as an error.
What kind of shadow is right?
One that softens and spreads as height increases, and whose direction agrees with the light falling on the product itself.
Which products suit this?
Those with clean geometry and defined edges — footwear, packaging, electronics. Soft goods fight the crispness the effect relies on.
Can I use it as a marketplace primary?
Usually not. Most marketplaces consider levitation too stylised for a primary image, though it works well on your own site.
Does it work with multiple products?
It can, but every object needs its own consistent shadow, and the difficulty compounds quickly with each addition.
Is a reflection better than a shadow?
A reflection implies a glossy surface below, which is a different scene. Pick one and keep it physically consistent.
