Etsy product photo requirements, and the 2026 AI disclosure rule sellers miss

· 3 min read

Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side, accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG or HEIC files, and allows up to 20 photos per listing since Etsy expanded the limit in August 2025. Since July 2026, any listing image touched by a generative AI tool, including AI background removal or AI enhanced edits, must be disclosed in the listing description.

The short answer

Etsy's size floor is generous, and almost any phone from the last several years clears it without trying. The two things that actually catch sellers out are quieter: a first photo below the thumbnail minimum can rank lower in search, and a 2026 policy change means far more product photography now needs a disclosure line than most sellers expect, including editing techniques that feel routine rather than generative.

The rule most sellers miss: AI disclosure

Etsy's seller policy, effective July 9, 2026, requires disclosure whenever a generative AI tool has touched the pixels of a listing image, and the bar for what counts is lower than most sellers assume. It is not limited to fully AI-generated scenes. Etsy's creativity standards classify AI-assisted work as "Designed by" the seller rather than "Made by" them, and that label change belongs in the listing's Production section whenever it applies.

What now needs a disclosure line in the listing description, according to Etsy's 2026 policy:

  • A background swapped or removed by an AI tool, not just cropped or replaced with a plain sweep
  • Shadows added or regenerated by an AI tool rather than shot under real light
  • Any part of the product itself regenerated or extended by a model
  • A composite putting your product on an AI generated model, mannequin, or scene

A shoot that clears Etsy's numbers without a studio

  1. 1Shoot at your camera's native resolutionMost current phones exceed 2000px on the shortest side without any adjustment. Downsizing later is trivial; recovering resolution never captured is not.
  2. 2Get the first photo right before anything elseEtsy treats your first image differently from the rest. It sets the thumbnail across search and your shop page, so it is the one photo worth reshooting until the framing, light, and crop are all correct.
  3. 3Keep the background plain but honestEtsy buyers expect handmade and vintage items to sit in some context more than an Amazon listing would, but a plain, evenly lit surface still reads as more trustworthy than a cluttered one.
  4. 4Export as JPG or PNG at full sizeBoth are broadly compatible and keep detail intact through Etsy's own resizing, which happens automatically once the photo is uploaded.

Where a plain photo becomes a listing photo

A single, honestly shot base photo is still the thing every Etsy listing depends on, disclosure rules or not. RorlAI can turn one clean product photo into an on model shot, a styled scene, or a colorway variant, and any of those outputs needs the same disclosure line Etsy now asks for on any AI touched image. It has no way around that requirement, and it should not try to: the obligation follows the seller, not the tool used to meet it.

Common questions

What is the minimum photo size Etsy will accept?
2000 pixels on the shortest side is Etsy's recommended floor. The first photo has its own, lower floor of 635 pixels wide, and falling under that can push a listing lower in search.
How many photos can I add to an Etsy listing?
Up to 20 as of an August 2025 expansion, doubled from the previous limit of 10.
Do I have to disclose AI edited photos on Etsy?
Yes, as of Etsy's July 9, 2026 policy. Any listing image where a generative AI tool touched the pixels, including background removal or added shadows, needs a disclosure line in the listing description.
Does background removal alone trigger the disclosure rule?
It can. Etsy's policy classifies AI based background removal as AI modification, separately from simply photographing a product against a plain sweep.
Does Etsy require a pure white background like Amazon does?
No. Etsy is more permissive than marketplaces built around a strict main image standard, and handmade or vintage context in a photo is common. A plain, consistent background still helps buyers compare listings.
