How to photograph clothes for TikTok Shop, and the AI disclosure rule that catches sellers off guard
· 4 min read
TikTok Shop listings hold up to 9 images in a square 1:1 crop, with a minimum resolution of 600 by 600 pixels and 1000 by 1000 recommended. The main image needs a clean white or neutral background with the product filling at least 80% of the frame. Listings under 5 images are capped in visibility. Any AI-generated model or background must carry a visible AI-generated disclosure label under TikTok Shop's 2026 content policy.

TikTok Shop listings take up to 9 images, all cropped square. The platform's own listing quality tier caps visibility for anything under 5 images, so 5 is really the practical floor rather than a suggestion. Resolution has a hard minimum of 600 by 600 pixels, but 800 by 800 or higher is what TikTok itself recommends, and 1000 by 1000 gives the sharpest result in both the scrolling feed and a shopper's zoomed in view.

What the main image cannot have
The first image is held to a stricter standard than the rest. It needs a pure white or neutral backdrop with no promotional text, stickers, or logos layered on top, and no visible shadow on the backdrop itself. TikTok also does not allow two images in one listing showing the same angle, so each of your nine slots needs to earn its place: front, back, a side angle, closures or hardware, a fabric close up, and a size or scale reference are the ones worth prioritizing.
The rule most sellers do not expect: AI disclosure
TikTok Shop's 2026 content policy requires a visible AI-generated disclosure label on any listing image that TikTok considers significantly created or altered by AI, and the scope is wider than most sellers assume. It is not limited to an obviously synthetic background. TikTok draws a line between AI-assisted editing, which usually needs no label, and AI-generated content, which always does, and the policy names AI-generated models and AI-generated scenes specifically as content that crosses that line.
TikTok Shop's policy calls out these as requiring the label:
- An AI-generated model wearing your garment, even when the garment itself is a real photo composited in
- An AI-generated background or scene behind a real product, such as a beach or a styled room that was never actually shot
- Any part of the product itself extended or regenerated by a model
- A synthetic voiceover in a listing video, separately from whether the video footage itself is real
A shoot that clears both the spec and the disclosure question
- 1Shoot the real garment firstA genuine photo against a clean, evenly lit background, square from the start, covers your main image without triggering any disclosure at all.
- 2Fill the frameTikTok wants the product at 80% or more of the image. Move the camera closer rather than cropping tighter in post, which keeps resolution above the 1000px recommendation.
- 3Reserve AI generated shots for supporting images, and label themAn AI on model shot or styled scene can round out a listing past a real photo shoot's limits, but it needs the disclosure toggle switched on for that specific image.
- 4Fill all 5 to 9 slots with different anglesFront, back, a detail shot, and a scale reference beat five near duplicates of the same angle, which TikTok explicitly does not allow.
Where RorlAI fits, and where disclosure still applies
RorlAI can generate an on model shot or a styled scene from one product photo, which helps fill out a nine image TikTok Shop listing past what a single flat lay covers. It does not remove the disclosure obligation. Any image RorlAI generates for a TikTok Shop listing, on model or styled scene alike, needs the same AI-generated label TikTok's policy asks for on any synthetic image, and that obligation sits with the seller uploading it, not with the tool that made it.
Common questions
- How many photos can a TikTok Shop listing have?
- Up to 9, all cropped square. TikTok's own listing quality tier caps visibility for listings with fewer than 5 images, so 5 is the practical minimum for full reach.
- What resolution does TikTok Shop require?
- 600 by 600 pixels is the floor. TikTok recommends 800 by 800 or higher, and 1000 by 1000 pixels gives the sharpest result across the feed and a zoomed in product view.
- Do I have to disclose an AI-generated product photo on TikTok Shop?
- Yes, under TikTok Shop's 2026 content policy, any image TikTok considers significantly created or altered by AI needs a visible AI-generated label, including AI models and AI-generated backgrounds or scenes.
- Does the disclosure apply if only the background is AI-generated and the product is real?
- Yes. TikTok's policy specifically covers a real product placed in an AI-generated environment, not only fully synthetic images.
- What happens if I skip the disclosure label?
- TikTok Shop enforces a violation points system for undisclosed AI content, and the stated risk is reduced distribution or takedown of the listing image, not just a warning.
