Why this is worth getting right
A seamless pattern is defined by one property that is easy to state and easy to get wrong: the right edge has to continue into the left edge, and the bottom into the top, so that tiling produces an unbroken surface. Almost-seamless is worse than obviously-tiled, because the eye finds the repeating fault line and then cannot unsee it, and on a printed metre of fabric that fault line runs the entire length. Checking the join is therefore not optional — tile the image four times before trusting it, because a seam invisible in a single view is often obvious the moment it repeats. Scale is the decision people get wrong most often, and it is a physical question rather than a digital one. A motif that looks balanced on screen can print at the size of a thumbnail across a shirt, so the useful way to think is in finished centimetres on the cloth: how many repeats across a garment panel, and how the motif lands at a seam. Directionality matters commercially too, since a one-way pattern forces a cutter to lay every piece facing the same direction and wastes fabric, while a tossed or non-directional repeat can be nested efficiently. And the density trade-off is real: a busy pattern hides construction seams and print misalignment, while a sparse one shows both, which is why sparse patterns demand better production.

- Decide the repeat scale in finished centimetres on the cloth rather than in pixels, since screen size tells you nothing about print size.
- Prefer a non-directional or tossed repeat where you can, as one-way patterns force wasteful cutting layouts.
- Remember that dense patterns forgive seam misalignment while sparse ones expose it, so match density to your production quality.
