Temu seller photo requirements, and how to meet them without a studio

· 3 min read

Temu requires a minimum of three images per listing on a white or neutral background with the product centered. Apparel main images need at least 1,340 by 1,785 pixels in a 3:4 ratio, non-apparel images need at least 800 by 800 pixels, and every image must be your own photograph, not one copied from another listing.

The short answer

Temu's picture rules split in two directions that trip up new sellers: apparel and everything else get different minimum dimensions, and the platform checks whether a photo is actually yours rather than one lifted from a supplier page or a competing listing. Clearing the pixel minimums is easy. Shooting your own photo for every listing is the part sellers underestimate.

Every number Temu's image requirements come down to

Non-apparel main imageAt least 800 x 800 px, 1:1 ratio

Why the apparel ratio catches sellers off guard

Most sellers default to a square 1:1 crop because that is what every other marketplace in this list uses for its main image. Temu's apparel requirement is 3:4, a taller rectangle, and a square photo cropped down to fit it either loses the top or bottom of the garment or gets padded with empty background on the sides. Shooting apparel in portrait orientation from the start avoids the crop entirely.

What belongs in the secondary image slots

Temu allows up to ten secondary images beyond the main one, and the listings that convert best use that space deliberately:

  • A lifestyle shot showing the product in use, as the first secondary image
  • Close-ups of material or construction detail
  • A size guide for apparel, given in both centimetres and inches
  • A what's-in-the-box layout for anything sold as a set
  • A comparison or feature callout graphic in competitive categories

A shoot that hits both ratios without reshooting

  1. 1Shoot apparel in portrait, everything else squareSet your camera or phone orientation before the shoot rather than cropping after. Portrait for apparel gives you the 3:4 frame natively; square works directly for non-apparel categories.
  2. 2Use a plain white or light neutral backgroundTemu's main image rule is looser than Amazon's pure-white requirement, so a light grey or off-white backdrop with even lighting satisfies it without needing a true 255,255,255 fill.
  3. 3Centre the product with margin on every sideLeave enough border around the product that nothing touches the edge of the frame, since Temu's listing thumbnails crop in slightly on display.
  4. 4Export at 1,600px or largerThis clears the recommended size by a comfortable margin and keeps the file under the 3MB cap at normal JPEG compression.

Where a tool like RorlAI helps, and where it cannot

Generating a portrait 3:4 apparel image and a square non-apparel image from the same base photo, on a clean centred background, is the kind of repetitive re-export Temu's dual ratio requirement creates for every listing. It still has to start from a real photo you took of your own product. Temu's rule against reused manufacturer images is about provenance, not polish, and no amount of editing changes whose photo it originally was.

Common questions

Can I use the same photo for Temu and for Amazon or eBay?
The underlying shot can be the same, but you will likely need to crop or re-export it. Temu's apparel main image is a 3:4 portrait ratio, while Amazon's main image is effectively square with a stricter pure-white background requirement.
What is the minimum number of images Temu requires?
Three per listing to publish. Temu allows up to ten additional secondary images beyond the main one.
Does Temu require a pure white background like Amazon?
No. Temu's main image rule accepts a white or neutral background, which is less strict than Amazon's pixel-exact RGB 255,255,255 requirement.
Can I reuse a product photo from the manufacturer or a competitor's listing?
No. Temu requires sellers to shoot their own product photos, and reusing images from elsewhere is against the platform's rules, not just discouraged for quality reasons.
What is the minimum resolution for apparel versus other products?
Apparel main images need at least 1,340 by 1,785 pixels in a 3:4 ratio. Non-apparel main images need at least 800 by 800 pixels, with 1,600 pixels or larger recommended for both.
