Why this is worth getting right
Lens treatment is the highest-failure attribute in eyewear photography and the one buyers are most specific about. A gradient tint is dark at the top and clears toward the bottom, and the direction is not decorative — it is what makes a driving lens a driving lens. Generators flatten gradients into a single tone constantly, and a flattened gradient is a materially different product from the one being sold. Mirror coatings fail differently: a mirror is a mirror, so the correct render shows the environment in it, and a coating rendered as flat opaque colour looks like a cheap plastic lens rather than the finish it is. The second problem is scale and position on the face. Frames have a stated lens width, bridge width and temple length, and they must sit on the bridge of the nose with the temples passing above the ears — a render where the temples cross in front of the ear is instantly wrong to anyone who wears glasses, and it is a common failure because the ear is a complicated occlusion boundary. Third is frame geometry itself. Lens shape, bridge style and temple taper are the design, and a render that rounds a square lens or widens a keyhole bridge has changed the product. Fourth, and specific to eyewear commerce: the temple logo. Branding on eyewear lives on the outside of the temple arm in small text, it is high-value and it is exactly the scale at which text generation fails. Finally, the photographer’s own reflection: a flat frontal shot of a mirrored or dark lens shows the camera and whoever is holding it, which is the most common self-inflicted problem in DIY eyewear photography.
Tips that actually help
- Shoot with the temples fully open and both visible. A frame photographed folded gives no information about temple length or taper, which are part of the fit.
- Never shoot lenses square to a window. Dark and mirrored lenses reflect the room, and the photographer appears in the middle of the product.
- Photograph a gradient lens upright and in frame entirely so the direction of the gradient is unambiguous in the source.
- Get the temple logo sharp and side-on in at least one shot. Small text is where generation fails, and it is a high-value detail for branded eyewear.
- Include a side-profile view. The way a temple tapers and where the hinge sits are visible only from the side, and buyers use them to judge quality.
